San Diego Breast Augmentation at BeautifySD – Cosmetic Surgery in La Jolla, California.

What can Breast Augmentation Surgery do for me?

We appreciate that you have given us the opportunity to explain how Breast Augmentation can help you get the look you desire.
Breast Augmentation has a proven track record of providing women with fuller, shapelier, and more sensual curves. It is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic plastic surgery procedures in the U.S. today.

Depending on the individual needs of the patient, this procedure makes it possible for our plastic surgeons to potentially achieve several aesthetically desirable results. For example, we can:

  • Increase the size of under-developed breasts.
  • Replace lost breast volume (possibly due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss).
  • Make uneven breasts more symmetrical.
  • Re-create breasts lost to cancer (or other trauma).
  • Correct malformed nipples.
If you have a question or want to schedule an appointment for a one-on-one consultation, our doctors and staff are waiting to hear from you. Or, simply visit our contact us page to see how you can get in touch with us.

The Breast Augmentation Process

1. The Consultation

This is one of the most important steps to achieving your desired results. Dr. Gupta believes that understanding your goals is of top priority. Once he has listened to your concerns, he will interject his thoughts, from both a scientific and artistic perspective. Together with you, he will formulate a treatment plan that is right for you.

Dr. Gupta takes a holistic approach to breast augmentation — enhancing both the size and shape of the breast while ensuring that the result is harmonious with the entire body. He will discuss the steps required to achieving fuller, natural looking breasts.

At the end of this consult, you will feel empowered with information as all your questioned will be answered. It is natural to be nervous about any medical procedure. It is Dr. Gupta’s goal to make you feel calm and confident about the next steps of your upcoming breast augmentation. The doctors and staff at BeautifySD are devoted to warmly attending to each of our patients needs.

2. Choosing the Right Procedure for You

At BeautifySD, Dr. Gupta uses saline-filled breast implants, or the new FDA approved Cohesive Gel Silicone Implants. The new Cohesive Gel Silicone Implants have a more natural feel and are less likely to produce rippling than saline implants. However, they do require a slightly larger incision for proper placement. In your consultation, Dr. Gupta will work with you to select the most appropriate implant type, size and shape for your personal aesthetic goals.

Dr. Gupta will also discuss the various types of incisions that can be made, in order to insert the breast implant. These are the most commonly used incisions:

  • Inframammary: An incision placed in or near the crease under the breast which provides an easy and more precise approach to the placement of the implant.
  • Peri-Areolar: An incision placed in the border of the areol which provides easy access and a relatively hidden scar, but is not well suited for revisional surgery.
  • Axillary: An incision placed in the natural crease of the armpit.  Dr. Gupta is one of the few surgeons who provides breast augmentation via a small incision in the Axilla (armpit). A space for the implant is created under the breast using an endoscope (a tiny camera). These types of incisions heal very well and are barely noticeable — thus giving you a virtually “scarless” surgery.

Dr. Gupta has had extensive training using all of the above-mentioned approaches. So he’ll be able to help you make the correct choice for your personal goals.

3. Surgery Day

All patients must avoid taking aspirin (or anti-inflammatory drugs) for at least 10 days prior to breast augmentation surgery. This is because such medications may induce blood-thinning. Patients who smoke are also asked to stop for at least two weeks prior to the procedure — because smoking complicates the healing process.

On the morning of your procedure doctors recommend that you wear loose-fitting clothing, and make some arrangement for transportation home after surgery. Further instructions will be provided during consultations.

4. Recovery and Results

Once your breast augmentation is complete, your initial recovery time will be approximately 24-72 hours. Over the next few weeks, any swelling and soreness will resolve. The complete healing process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Dr. Gupta will continue to observe you carefully during your healing process, and will advise you when you can resume your normal daily activities. Most patients are able to return to work in about 4-7 days.

Common Breast Augmentation Questions

How much does breast augmentation cost?

There are several factors that determine the ultimate cost of the breast augmentation. The average cost ranges between $4,000 and $7,000, which includes the surgical fee and all related expenses such as anesthesia, facility, materials, etc. In 2004, The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) estimated the national average surgeon/physician fee alone charged by their member surgeons for breast augmentation to be $3,373, which did not include related expenses.

How long does breast augmentation surgery take?

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure, which normally takes approximately 1-3 hours to complete. The exact time will vary depending on the particular patient, the technique used, and the type of anesthesia.

Does breast augmentation leave scars?

It may take several months to a year for the scars to fade completely after your breast augmentation, however, the scars being small in size, it rarely is an issue for patients.

Does breast augmentation hurt?

The breast augmentation procedure itself is pain free, as some form of anesthesia will be used. Post surgical discomfort is short (typically 2 days) and varies in severity from patient to patient. We will make every effort to keep you comfortable with clear post operative instructions, pain relievers and muscle relaxants prescribed by your plastic surgeon.

How long does breast augmentation last?

After your breast augmentation, you will benefit from a long-lasting change that may improve both self-esteem and body image. Although these changes are not permanent, and in some patients implants may have to be replaced in the future, the longevity of the result is satisfactory to those that have experienced the process. According to the national surveys, Breast Augmentation procedure yields one of the highest patient satisfaction rate.

What are some of the complications associated with breast augmentation?

Although complications are extremely rare, they cannot be overlooked. They may include capsular contracture (squeezing of the implants by scar tissue), and implant rupture. Over time, the breast shape may change due to natural aging, gravity, hormonal changes etc, such that patients may consider retreatment or a supplementary breast lift procedure depending on the nature of the change.
